* News * - Electrical Safety
As the Part P Law comes into force, research undertaken by the NICEIC has found the public is woefully unaware of the electrical dangers lurking in their homes. Every householder questioned had electrical hazards in their homes, including exposed bare wires, loose cables, old wires and overload protection.
The law states that anyone carrying out fixed electrical work in England and Wales must ensure those electrical installations are:
Designed and installed to afford appropriate protection against mechanical and thermal damage, and so that they do not present electrical shock and fire hazards to people.
Suitably inspected and tested to verify that they meet the relevant equipment and installation Standards.
"You are responsible for ensuring that the electrical work carried out in your home meets the safety requirements"
It will be a legal requirement for homeowners and landlords to be able to prove that all fixed electrical installations and alteration work have been carried out and certified by a competent person – that is by an electrician registered with a Government approved body such as the NICEIC.
The NICEIC is urging homeowners who plan to tackle home improvement projects to be aware of the tough new changes to the building regulations, which, if not complied with could land you with a £5000 fine and a property you cannot sell.
